Karnataka Creates AI-Powered Early Warning System for Crop Flooding

In response to increasingly erratic monsoons, Karnataka’s Agriculture Department has deployed an AI-driven flood-forecasting alert system for farmlands in Kodagu and Hassan districts. By analyzing real-time satellite data, rainfall patterns, and soil moisture sensors, the system predicts potential flood threats up to 72 hours in advance. Farmers receive SMS alerts urging preemptive drainage or crop protection measures. In the first season, over 5,000 hectares were safeguarded, and crop loss was reduced by approximately 30 percent compared to the previous year. The program is integrated with the state’s agriculture helpline, advising farmers on relocation plans and soil treatment post-flood. Authorities are expanding coverage to additional districts and plan to link the system with crop insurance disbursements, enhancing resilience in flood-vulnerable regions.
